Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of ^athe Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

Πέτρος ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐκλεκτοῖς παρεπιδήμοις διασπορᾶς Πόντου, Γαλατίας, Καππαδοκίας, Ἀσίας, καὶ Βιθυνίας,

according to ^bthe foreknowledge of God the Father, ^cin the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and ^dfor sprinkling with his blood:

May ^egrace and ^fpeace be multiplied to you.

κατὰ πρόγνωσιν θεοῦ πατρός, ἐν ἁγιασμῷ πνεύματος, εἰς ὑπακοὴν καὶ ῥαντισμὸν αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ· χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη πληθυνθείη.

^gBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! ^hAccording to his great mercy, ⁱhe has caused us to be born again to a living hope ^jthrough the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Εὐλογητὸς ὁ θεὸς καὶ πατὴρ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὁ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος ἀναγεννήσας ἡμᾶς εἰς ἐλπίδα ζῶσαν δι᾽ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐκ νεκρῶν,

to ^kan inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and ^lunfading, ^mkept in heaven for you,

εἰς κληρονομίαν ἄφθαρτον καὶ ἀμίαντον καὶ ἀμάραντον, τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς εἰς ὑμᾶς

who by God’s power are being guarded ⁿthrough faith for a salvation ^oready to be revealed in the last time.

τοὺς ἐν δυνάμει θεοῦ φρουρουμένους διὰ πίστεως εἰς σωτηρίαν ἑτοίμην ἀποκαλυφθῆναι ἐν καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ.

In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by ^pvarious trials,

ἐν ᾧ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὀλίγον ἄρτι εἰ ▼

δέον λυπηθέντες ἐν ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς,

so that ^rthe tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes ^sthough it is tested by ^tfire—may be found to result in ^upraise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

ἵνα τὸ δοκίμιον ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως ▼

^xThough you have not seen him, you love him. ^yThough you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,

ἀγαλλιᾶσθε χαρᾷ ἀνεκλαλήτῳ καὶ δεδοξασμένῃ,

obtaining ^abthe outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

κομιζόμενοι τὸ τέλος τῆς πίστεως ▼

ὑμῶν σωτηρίαν ψυχῶν.

Concerning this salvation, ^adthe prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,

Περὶ ἧς σωτηρίας ἐξεζήτησαν καὶ ἐξηραύνησαν προφῆται οἱ περὶ τῆς εἰς ὑμᾶς χάριτος προφητεύσαντες,

inquiring ^aewhat person or time ^afthe Spirit of Christ in them was indicating ^agwhen he predicted ^ahthe sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

ἐραυνῶντες εἰς τίνα ἢ ποῖον καιρὸν ἐδήλου τὸ ἐν αὐτοῖς πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ προμαρτυρόμενον τὰ εἰς Χριστὸν παθήματα καὶ τὰς μετὰ ταῦτα δόξας·

^aiIt was revealed to them that ^ajthey were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you ^akby the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, ^althings into which angels long to look.

οἷς ἀπεκαλύφθη ὅτι οὐχ ἑαυτοῖς ὑμῖν δὲ διηκόνουν αὐτά, ἃ νῦν ἀνηγγέλη ὑμῖν διὰ τῶν εὐαγγελισαμένων ▼

ὑμᾶς πνεύματι ἁγίῳ ἀποσταλέντι ἀπ᾽ οὐρανοῦ, εἰς ἃ ἐπιθυμοῦσιν ἄγγελοι παρακύψαι.

Therefore, ^anpreparing your minds for action, ▼

▼Greek girding up the loins of your mind

and ^apbeing sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Διὸ ἀναζωσάμενοι τὰς ὀσφύας τῆς διανοίας ὑμῶν, νήφοντες τελείως, ἐλπίσατε ἐπὶ τὴν φερομένην ὑμῖν χάριν ἐν ἀποκαλύψει Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

As obedient children, ^aqdo not be conformed to the passions ^arof your former ignorance,

ὡς τέκνα ὑπακοῆς, μὴ συσχηματιζόμενοι ταῖς πρότερον ἐν τῇ ἀγνοίᾳ ὑμῶν ἐπιθυμίαις,

but ^asas he who called you is holy, you also be holy ^atin all your conduct,

ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸν καλέσαντα ὑμᾶς ἅγιον καὶ αὐτοὶ ἅγιοι ἐν πάσῃ ἀναστροφῇ γενήθητε,

since it is written, ^au“You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

διότι γέγραπται ▼

And if you ^aycall on him as Father who ^azjudges ^baimpartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves ^bbwith fear throughout the time of your exile,

Καὶ εἰ πατέρα ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸν ἀπροσωπολήμπτως κρίνοντα κατὰ τὸ ἑκάστου ἔργον, ἐν φόβῳ τὸν τῆς παροικίας ὑμῶν χρόνον ἀναστράφητε·

knowing that you ^bcwere ransomed from ^bdthe futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,

εἰδότες ὅτι οὐ φθαρτοῖς, ἀργυρίῳ ἢ χρυσίῳ, ἐλυτρώθητε ἐκ τῆς ματαίας ὑμῶν ἀναστροφῆς πατροπαραδότου,

but ^bewith the precious blood of Christ, like that of ^bfa lamb ^bgwithout blemish or spot.

ἀλλὰ τιμίῳ αἵματι ὡς ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀσπίλου Χριστοῦ,

He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but ^bhwas made manifest ^biin the last times for the sake of you

προεγνωσμένου μὲν πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, φανερωθέντος δὲ ἐπ᾽ ▼

ἐσχάτου τῶν χρόνων δι᾽ ὑμᾶς

^bkwho through him are believers in God, ^blwho raised him from the dead and ^bmgave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for ^boa sincere brotherly love, ^bplove one another earnestly from a pure heart,

^bssince you have been born again, ^btnot of perishable seed but of imperishable, through ^buthe living and abiding word of God;

ἀναγεγεννημένοι οὐκ ἐκ σπορᾶς φθαρτῆς ἀλλὰ ἀφθάρτου, διὰ λόγου ζῶντος θεοῦ καὶ ▼

for

^bw“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,

διότι πᾶσα σὰρξ ὡς χόρτος, καὶ πᾶσα δόξα ▼

^bzbut the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And this word ^cais the good news that was preached to you.

τὸ δὲ ῥῆμα κυρίου μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. τοῦτο δέ ἐστιν τὸ ῥῆμα τὸ εὐαγγελισθὲν εἰς ὑμᾶς.
